Anastasio era el abad [del monasterio] del Monte Sinaí. Fue monje por un largo tiempo bajo el glorioso abad Juan Clímaco; y después de la muerte de Juan, Anastasio se convirtió en abad. Además de ser un gran asceta, Anastasio era un prolífico autor de vidas de los santos y de escritos de instrucción. Encabezó una amarga lucha con los herejes acefalitas, que negaban las decisiones del Cuarto Concilio Ecuménico (Calcedonia, 451 d. C.). Murió en edad avanzada en el año 685, y fue a habitar con el Señor a quien sirvió fielmente.
