Hermenegildo era hijo del rey visigodo Leovigildo, que creía la herejía arriana. Hermenegildo, empero, no abandonó la fe ortodoxa, a pesar de las lisonjas y amenazas de su salvaje padre hereje. Su padre lo arrojó en la cárcel y, un Domingo de Pascua, envió un obispo hereje temprano en la mañana para que le diese la Comunión. Este varón de Dios rehusó recibir la comunión de manos de un hereje, y el obispo comunicó esto al rey. El rey se enfureció y ordenó a los verdugos que degollasen a Hermenegildo, lo cual ocurrió en el 586. Leovigildo luego se arrepintió de haber matado a su hijo, renunció a su herejía, y regresó a la Ortodoxia.
