San Erasmo era un obispo sirio que huyó durante la persecución de Diocleciano para refugiarse en el Monte Líbano, donde vivió como un ermitaño solitario a quien alimentaba un cuervo. Al descubrírsele, compareció ante el emperador, quien le mandó azotar y apalear con garrotes claveteados; luego se le envolvió en pez y se le prendió fuego. Como a pesar de todo aquello, el obispo seguía ileso, se le arrojó en un calabozo para que muriera de hambre. Sin embargo, un ángel lo sacó de la prisión y lo condujo a la provincia romana de Iliria. Ahí consiguió convertir a muchos, pero también fue sometido a otras torturas incluidas la silla y las corazas de hierro calentadas al rojo. De nuevo quedó indemne, y el ángel volvió a salvarlo, llevándolo a Formia donde el Santo ya anciano murió.
