El profeta Agueo profetizaba en Judá, en los tiempos del rey persa Darío I (Gistapsa, 522-486 a.C.). En aquel tiempo muchos judíos bajo el liderazgo de Zorobabel volvieron del cautiverio babilonio a Judá. El sumo sacerdote se llamaba Josué. En el segundo año después del regreso del cautiverio de Babilonia, los judíos comenzaron a reconstruir en Jerusalén un Templo en el mismo lugar del destruido Templo de Salomón. Pero debido al desacuerdo con samaritanos y otros opositores la construcción se interrumpió por quince años hasta que el rey Darío ordenó volver a la construcción.
