Nació en Neocesarea de Capadocia de padres no creyentes. Estudió en Atenas, Alejandría, Beirut y finalmente en Cesarea, con Orígenes, quien también le instruyó en la fe de Cristo. Entonces, en el año 240, fue hecho obispo de su país natal, donde encontró sólo diecisiete cristianos; al morir alrededor del 265, había dejado apenas ese mismo número de no creyentes. Todo el tiempo de su episcopado fue una sucesión admirables milagros, por los cuales adquirió el nombre de «taumaturgo» (obrador de milagros), siendo llamado «un segundo Moisés» incluso por los enemigos de la verdad (cfr. San Basilio Magno, Del Espíritu Santo, capítulo XXIX).
