Sfantul Cuvios Ioan a fost monah in Lavra Veche a lui Hariton cel Mare din Palestina, numita si Pesterile cele Vechi. In acest loc s-a daruit deplin tuturor nevointelor, petrecand in rugaciune si priveghere, si cugetand pururea la ceasul mortii. In acest locas monahal el s-a invrednicit de harul preotiei. Cuviosul Ioan a trecut la cele vesnice in secolul al 8-lea. Deoarece Cuviosul Ioan s-a nevoit cea mai mare parte a vietii sale in acea pestera veche, slujind in biserica, a fost numit si Paleolavritul sau "al pesterii celei vechi".
