El a fost din satul Kessana, din Tracia. El a fost bărbat căsătorit şi a avut două fiice. Soţia lui, căzută în mîinile tîlharilor turci, a trecut la Islam. Spre a îşi mîntui soţia din necuratul harem, Sfintul Timotei s-a prefăcut că este şi el musulman. După ce şi-a salvat soţia, a dus-o şi a închinoviat-o pe ea într-o mînăstire de maici, iar pe sine în Marea Lavră din Sfîntul Munte Athos. După o vreme el a trecut la Mînăstirea Esfigmenu, tot din Sfîntul Munte. El a dorit şi mucenicia sîngeroasă pentru Hristos, aşa cum a dobîndit-o şi Avva Agathanghel, ce fusese şi el vieţuitor la Esfigmenu. Astfel Avva Timotei a fost decapitat de turci la Jedrene pentru mărturisirea Credinţei în Hristos, în douăzeci şi nouă de zile ale lunii Octombrie, din anul 1820. Trupul său a fost aruncat în rîu, dar îmbrăcămintea lui a fost aflată de Avva Ghermano, duhovnicescul lui părinte.
