El a fost un mare nevoitor egiptean şi contemporan al Sfinţilor Arsenic cel Mare şi Agathon. El a dus viaţa tuturor nevoinţelor în mînăstirea lui, ce se afla lîngă un lac, la cetatea Arsinoe. Acolo el a îndrumat pe mulţi dintre duhovniceştii lui fraţi la calea mîntuirii. Avva losif i-a fost lui sfătuitor şi prieten apropiat. A zis odată Avva Lot către Avva losif: "Avva, eu postesc cît de mult pot, mă ţin strîns de rugăciune, mă nevoiesc întru tăcere şi cugetări dumnezeieşti, iar cu înfrînarea mă păzesc de gîndurile necurate. Ce altceva aş mai putea să fac?" Atunci Avva losif s-a ridicat în picioare, şi-a înălţat mîinile la rugăciune iar degetele lui au luminat ca nişte lumînări aprinse. După ce s-a rugat astfel, Avva losif a zis: «De voieşti, te poţi face cu totul lumină!" Plăcîndu-I lui Dumnezeu şi aşezînd pre mulţi pe calea mîntuirii, Sfîntul Preacuviosul Părintele nostru Lot s-a odihnit cu pace, în veacul al cincilea.
