Acest Sfînt Ignatie a fost fiul împăratului bizantin Mihail Rangabe. El a urcat pe scaunul patriarhal în anul 846, în urma Sfîntului Metodic. Apoi, în anul 858, Sfîntul Ignatie a fost depus din scaun şi trimis în surghiun, în locul său a fost sfinţit patriarh vestitul Fotie [cinstit de Biserică ca Sfînt, v. 6 februarie], secretarul particular al împăratului. Dar cînd la tronul imperial a venit împăratul Vasile Macedoneanul, el 1-a reinstalat pe Sfîntul Ignatie în scaunul patriarhal. Sfîntul Ignatie a păstorit Biserica lui Dumnezeu cu multă rîvnă şi înţelepciune. El a ctitorit Mînsătirea Sfinţilor Arhangheli în care s-a şi odhihnit în Domnul, în vîrstă fiind de optzeci şi nouă de ani.
