Sfîntul preacuvios Teoctist a fost un mare postitor şi împreunănevoitor cu Sfîntul Eftimie cel Mare. Sfîntul Teoctist a fost egumen al Lavrei Marelui Eftimie, care se afla cam la şase mile distanţă de Ierusalim, pe drumul lerihonului. El a fost întru toate un următor fidel al Sfîntului Eftimie cel Mare, sub a cărui lumină a călăuzit duhovniceşte sufletele şi a condus lavra, pînă la nouăzeci de ani ai vieţii sale. El a plăcut lui Dumnezeu cu viaţa pe care a dus-o, şi s-a strămutat la locaşurile Sale cereşti în mijlocul veacului al cincilea, în timpul arhipăstoririi lui Anastasie, Patriarhul Ierusalimului.
