Sfîntul loanichie s-a născut la Prizren, slujind mai întîi ca secretar al Regelui Duşan. El a fost ridicat arhiepiscop în 1339, şi apoi înălţat la rangul de Patriarh în anul 1346. Sfîntul loanichie a fost un ahipăstor zilot şi un mare organizator al Bisericii Sîrbe, "un mare apărător al legilor Sfintei Biserici." El s-a odihnit întru Domnul în a treia zi a lunii septembrie din anul 1349. Sfintele lui moşate odihnesc la Patriarhia din Peci.
