Ei au fost calugari crestini care au luat mucenicia din mîna regelui Indiei, Abenner. Urîndu-1 pe Avva Varlaam pentru aceea ca i-a botezat fiul, pe loasaf, întru Credinta Crestina, regele Abenner a trimis oameni pe urmele lui. Dar urmaritorii nu 1-au aflat pe Avva Varlaam, care s-a facut nevazut de la fata lor. în schimb ei au prins si au legat alti saptesprezece monahi, pe care i-au adus înaintea regelui. Abenner i-a osîndit pe acestia la moarte, iar tortionarii lui i-au omorît pe ei bestial: ei le-au scos ochii, le-au taiat limbile, le-au frînt bratele si picioarele, iar la urma i-au decapitat. Dar chiar si asa Credinta Crestina nu a putut fi stîrpita din India ci dimpotriva, ea s-a întarit înca si mai mult, fiind întemeiata pe sîngele mucenicesc al atletilor lui Hristos.
