Sfîntu Petru acesta a fost succesorul Sfîntului Theona la scaunul episcopal din Alexandria, unde a fost o vreme profesor la celebra şcoală de filosofic condusă de Origen. El a fost înălţat la scaunul episcopal la anul 299, şi a luat muceniceasca moarte la anul 311, lîngă mormîntul Sfîntului Apostol Marcu. El a păstorit Biserica lui Dumnezeu în vremuri cumplite, cînd ea era atacată şi din afară, de păgînii băutori de sînge nevinovat, dar şi dinăuntru de către lupii îmbrăcaţi în piei de oaie, cei, adică de eretici, în vremea Sfîntului Petru la Alexandria au luat mucenicia şase sute şi şaptezece de creştini. Adesea familii întregi erau urcate pe eşafod şi omorîte înaintea gloatelor, în aceeaşi perioadă, necuratul Arie înşela credincioşii cu învăţăturile lui mincinoase. Sfîntul Petru 1-a excomunicat şi 1-a dat anatemei şi în lumea aceasta, şi în cealaltă. Domnul însuşi i s-a arătat în temniţă pe acest mare şi minunat sfînt.
