El s-a născut la Galata, în Constantinopol, şi s-a numit la început Diamantis. în tinereţile lui el a dus o viaţă de desfrînări, iacîndu-se chiar şi musulman. Dar 1-a cuprins după aceea cumplita remuşcare a inimii, şi lepădînd toate, Diamantis a plecat la Sfîntul Munte Athos. El acolo s-a curăţit cu cele mai aspre nevoinţe călugăreşti timp de doisprezece ani încheiaţi, ca monah în Lavra Sfîntului Athanasie. El însă a dorit cu sete mucenicia, spre curăţirea păcatelor lui. De aceea monahul Damaschin a mers la Constantinopol şi, intrînd în moschei, îşi iacea mare Sfînta Cruce şi striga tuturor musulmanilor că mincinos este Mohamet al lor, şi că singurul Adevăratul Dumnezeu este Dumnezeul Treimic al Creştinilor, iar lisus Hristos este Mîntuitorul, Fiul Lui. El a fost decapitat înaintea porţii Fanarului , în a treisprezecea zi a lunii noiembrie, din anul 1681. Sfintele lui moaşte odihnesc la Halki, în Mînăstirea Sfintei Treimi.
