Ο Όσιος Βησσαρίων γεννήθηκε στην Αίγυπτο, στην πόλη Μισήρι και έζησε περί τα τέλη του 4ου και αρχές του 5ου αιώνα μ.Χ. Διήλθε το βίο του στην έρημο της Αιγύπτου ως ασκητής. Ποτέ δεν απέκτησε ένα ένδυμα. Επί σαράντα ημέρες και νύχτες στάθηκε ακλόνητος σε ακανθώδες θάμνους, σαν στύλος, για να υπερνικήσει τον ύπνο, έχοντας τα χέρια και το βλέμμα στραμμένα προς τον ουρανό, την δε ψυχή του ενωμένη με τον Θεό. Ο Θεός τον τίμησε με την χάρη και ευλογία του, αφού επιτέλεσε μεγάλα θαύματα.
