Ο Όσιος Θαδδαίος ο Ομολογητής ήταν Σκύθης και υπηρέτης του Αγίου Θεοδώρου του Στουδίτη, στη Μονή του οποίου ο Θαδδαίος έγινε μοναχός και διακρίθηκε για την αυστηρή άσκηση. Κάποτε λοιπόν, όταν συνόδευε στ' ανάκτορα τον ηγούμενο του Θεόδωρο, ήλεγξε τον εικονομάχο βασιλιά Μιχαήλ (820 - 829 μ.Χ.) (ο Μ. Γαλανός αναφέρει τον Λέοντα τον Ε') μπροστά στη σύγκλητο για την ασέβειά του απέναντι στις Ιερές εικόνες. Τότε ο Βασιλιάς, τον εξανάγκαζε να ποδοπατήσει την εικόνα του Χριστού, πράγμα που ο Όσιος όχι μόνο δεν έπραξε, αλλά αποκάλεσε τον βασιλιά πληρωμένο τύραννο και ακάθαρτο. Τότε βασανίστηκε σκληρά, σύρθηκε από τα πόδια στους δρόμους της πόλης, οπότε μετά τρεις μέρες πέθανε.
