Ο Άγιος Τιμόθεος έζησε στα μέσα του 6ου αιώνα μ.Χ., επί βασιλέων Ιουστίνου του θράκας και ανεψιού του Ιουστινιανού του Μεγάλου. Λόγω τη μεγάλης του αρετής, έγινε επίσκοπος Προκοννήσου ή Προικοννήσου, και που σήμερα λέγεται Μαρμαράς. Τα ποιμαντικά του καθήκοντα εξάσκησε άριστα δια της πραότητας του και δια της προσευχής. Κάποτε μάλιστα θεράπευσε και την κόρη του βασιλιά Ιουστινιανού από δαιμόνιο. Απεβίωσε ειρηνικά την 1η Αυγούστου. Αργότερα η βασίλισσα Θεοδώρα, προς ένδειξη ευγνωμοσύνης στον Άγιο, έκτισε Μονή στο όνομα του, εκεί όπου βρέθηκε το άγιο λείψανο του. Εκεί κοντά μάλιστα, βρέθηκε και πηγή αγιάσματος.
