Οι Άγιοι Φιλήμων, Άρχιππος και Ονήσιμος είχαν θερμή αγάπη προς τον Κύριο μας Ιησού Χριστό και τέλεια αφοσίωση προς το Ευαγγέλιο Του. Όταν, λοιπόν, διατάχθηκαν να αρνηθούν το Χριστό και να θυσιάσουν στα είδωλα, και οι τρεις, με μια φωνή, απάντησαν με τα θεόπνευστα λόγια του Απόστολου Παύλου: «Ουδείς γαρ ημών έαυτώ ζή και ουδείς έαυτώ αποθνήσκει· εάν τε γαρ ζώμεν, τω Κυρίω ζώμεν, εάν τε άποθνήσκωμεν, τω Κυρίω άποθνήσκομεν, εάν τε ούν ζώμεν, εάν τε άποθνήσκωμεν, του Κυρίου έσμέν» ( Προς Ρωμαίους, ιδ' 7, 8). Δηλαδή, κανείς από μας που πιστεύουμε δε ζει για τον εαυτό του και κανείς δεν πεθαίνει για τον εαυτό του. Διότι και αν ζούμε, ζούμε για να δουλεύουμε στον Κύριο, και αν πεθαίνουμε, πεθαίνουμε υποτασσόμενοι στο θέλημα του Κυρίου. Και αν, λοιπόν, ζούμε και αν πεθαίνουμε, είμαστε κτήμα του Κυρίου.
