Ο Άγιος Αδριανός έζησε στα χρόνια του βασιλιά Λικινίου (313 μ.Χ.). Καταγόταν από τη Ρώμη και ήταν γιος του Πρόθου βασιλιά της Ρώμης, που βασίλευσε το 276 μ.Χ. Ο Αδριανός διέμεινε, μαζί με τον αδελφό του Δομέτιο - επίσκοπο αργότερα του Βυζαντίου μετά τον Τίτο - στο Βυζάντιο. Ποθώντας να μαρτυρήσει για τον Χριστό, πήγε στη Νικομήδεια και ήλεγξε τον Λικίνιο, διότι μάταια ταλαιπωρούσε τα ρωμαϊκά στρατεύματα προφασιζόμενος ότι διώκει τους χριστιανούς. Όποτε ο Λικίνιος τον βασάνισε με διάφορους τρόπους και στο τέλος τον αποκεφάλισε. Ο δε αδελφός του Δομέτιος, πήρε το άγιο λείψανο του και το έθαψε στην Αργυρόπολη, που βρίσκεται κοντά στο Βυζάντιο. Εκεί επίσης βρίσκονταν και τα άγια λείψανα των Μαρτύρων Αδριανού και Ναταλίας, μαζί με αυτά του Αποστόλου Στάχυος, που έκανε πρώτος επίσκοπος Βυζαντίου μετά τον πρωτόκλητο Ανδρέα.
