დიდმოწამე მერკური წარმოშობით სკვითი იყო და მხედრად მსახურობდა რომაელთა ლაშქარში. უსჯულო იმპერატორმა დეკიუსმა (249-251) გამოსცა კანონი, რომელიც რომის მოქალაქეებისგან წარმართული ღვთაებების თაყვანისცემას მოითხოვდა, ქრისტიანებს კი სასიკვდილო სასჯელით ემუქრებოდა. ამ დროს იმპერიას ბარბაროსები დაესხნენ თავს და დეკიუსმა ლაშქრი შეკრიბა მათთან საბრძოლველად. ერთ-ერთი ბრძოლის დროს წმიდა მერკურის უფლის ანგელოზი გამოეცხადა, მახვილი გაუწოდა და უთხრა: „ნუ გეშინია, მხნედ შეებრძოლე მტერს და როცა გაიმარჯვებ, არ დაივიწყო უფალი ღმერთი შენი“. წმიდა მეომარმა ამ მახვილით გაბედულად გაიკაფა გზა მოწინააღმდეგის ურდოებს შორის, ბარბაროსთა მეფეც მოკლა და რომაელებს გამარჯვება მოუტანა. მადლიერმა იმპერატორმა სიმამაცისთვის წმიდა მერკური უხვად დააჯილდოვა და მხედართუფროსად დანიშნა.
