Pyhä Gregorios Siinailainen oli hesykastisen liikkeen alkuunpanija. Hän syntyi noin vuonna 1268 ja kuoli vuonna 1310. Siinailta ja Kreetasta hän siirtyi Athosvuorelle ja alkoi siellä opettaa munkeille, jotka olivat keskittyneet lähinnä vain ulkonaisiin kilvoituksiin, sisäistä elämää, siis mielen varjelemista, ja lakkaamatonta Jeesuksen rukousta. Hänen vaikutuksensa ulottui hänen oppilaittensa välityksellä aina Venäjälle saakka. Hänen teologisesti raitis näkemyksensä pitää kilvoituksen perustana jo kasteen yhteydessä saamamme armon elvyttämisen toimivaksi. Siihen on olemassa kaksi tietä:
