Dem hl. Mark, der Bischof von Arethusa war, wurde vom Kaiser Konstantin den Großen (306-337) die Vollmacht gegeben, die heidnischen Götzentempel zu zerstörten. Als der andere Kaiser, Julianos der Apostat (361-363), der die Christen wieder verfolgen ließ, zu macht kam, ließen die Heiden den hl. Mark verfolgen und foltern. Zusammen mit ihm litten das Martyrium der Diakon Kyrill aus Heliopolis (in Phönizien) und viele Christen aus Askalon. Von diesen Geschehnissen berichteten der hl. Gregor, der Theologe (+389, sein Gedenktag: 7. Februar (25. Januar)) und der selige Theodoret.
