Der hl. Akakios wurde in Melitene, in Armenien (heut. Malatya in der Türkei) in einer frommen Familie geboren. Nach dem Gelöbnis der Familie wurde er dem Dienst der Kirche, und zwar dem Bischof Otrij von Melitene zur Verfügung gestellt. Nach dem Tode des Otrij wurde der hl. Akakios zum Bischof von Melitene vom Volk gewählt. Er verteidigte den orthodoxen Glauben gegen die Irrlehre des Nestorianismus, unter den hl. Vätern des III. Ökumenischen Konzil von Ephesus, im Jahre 431 (Gedenktag: 4. Juni (22. Mai)).
