Prokopius war Weltpriester und wurde dann Mönch. Ab 1030 lebte er als Einsiedler im Sázavatal. Herzog Ulrich wurde während einer Jagd durch einen Hirsch zu Prokop in die Höhle geführt; beeindruckt von dessen Frömmigkeit half er ihm, ein Benediktinerkloster in Sázava bei Prag zu gründen. Die Legende erzählt, wie er den Teufel vor den Pflug spannte oder ihn als Rad an seinem Wagen einsetzte. Sein Kloster, das er als Abt leitete, praktizierte die Liturgie in altslawischer Sprache.
