Als Sohn eines bedeutenden und reichen Nowgoroders geboren und auf den Namen Aleksej getauft, zog er sich nach dem Tode der Eltern mit anderen vornehmen Jugendlichen in die Einöde von Chutyn' auf einem Hügel oberhalb des Volchov zurück (etwa 10 km von Nowgorod); wo eine Kirche der Verklärung Christi errichtet wurde. Dort gründete er 1192 das später nach ihm benannte Kloster; dessen Abt er wurde. Er war mit der Gabe der Vorsehung und der Wunder ausgestattet, Nachdem er dem aus Konstantinopel gekommenen Priestermönch Antonios die Leitung des Klosters übertragen hatte, verstarb Varlaam 1192.
