Hermenegild war der Sohn des Westgotenkönigs Leovigild. 570 wurde er mit Ingundis, der Tochter Sigiberts I. von Austrasien, vermählt. Durch sie und Bischof Leander von Sevilla bewogen, entsagte er dem Arianismus. Sein darüber empörter Vater ließ ihn 584 in Sevilla gefangen nehmen, ein Jahr lang in Valencia gefangen halten und ob seiner Unbeugsamkeit 585 in Tarragona enthaupten als er sich weigerte, die Kommunion aus der Hand eines arianischen Bischofs zu empfangen.
