Der hl. Prophet Jonas stammte aus dem Dorf Geth - Ophir, und wirkte unter dem König Jerobeam von Israel, im 9. Jahrhundert vor Christus. Sein dreitägiger Aufenthalt im Innern des Wahlfisches wird in den Predigten und Hymen der orthodoxen Kirche als Vorbild des dreitägigen Weilens Jesu im Grabe und der Auferstehung genommen. Seine Predigt und die Buße der Nineviten wurden zum Beispiel zur Nachahmung für alle Sünder.
