Der hl. Nikephoros war Laie und befreundet mit Saprikios, einem orthodoxen Priester. Nach einem Streit redeten sie nicht mehr miteinander. Mehrmals wollte Nikephoros sich mit seinem Freund versöhnen, Saprikios wollte dies aber nicht. Später, während der Christenverfolgung, wurde Saprikios verhaftet und zu Tode verurteilt. Da wartete Nikephoros auf dem Weg zur Hinrichtungsstätte und bat Saprikios wieder um Verzeihung, was der verweigerte. Plötzlich schwor Saprikios den Christus ab, opferte den Götzen und wurde frei gelassen. Der hl. Nikephoros aber sagte dem Henker, er nehme stattdessen Saprikios' Platz als Bekenner an und wurde daraufhin als Martyrer enthauptet. Das geschah um Jahre 257 in Antiochia in Syrien (heut. Antakya in der Türkei).
