Der heilige Wasilij (Basilios) war Bischof von Amasia, zur Zeit des Kaisers Konstantin des Großen (306-337). Zur Zeit der Verfolgung tröstete er die Christen, verteidigte den Orthodoxen Glauben gegen Irrlehrer und verfasste ein Sendschreiben gegen Arianer. Im Jahre 322 nahm er an dem Kirchenkonzilen von Gangra und Neokässaria teil. Weil er die hl. Glafira (Gedenktag: 9. Mai (26. April) bei sich verborgen hatte, wurde er unter Kaiser Lykinios in Nikomdien enthauptet.
