Der ehrw. Pansophij war der Sohn des Prokonsuls von Alexandria, Nilos, nach dessen Tod gab er sein Vermögen ab und ging in die Wüsste, wo er 27 Jahre hindurch ein frommes Leben führte. Bei der Verfolgung des röm. Kaisers Dekios, dem Präfekten von Alexandria als Christ vorgeführt, wurde er wegen Widerlegung der heidnischen Irrtümer mit Ruten geschlagen und starb unter diesen Qualen im III. Jahrh.
