Daniel soll mit 12 Jahren in ein Kloster eingetreten sein. Als er seinen Abt auf einer Reise nach Antiochia - dem heutigen Antakya in der Türkei - begleitete, konnte er den berühmt gewordenen Säulensteher Simeon kennen lernen. Seit 451 lebte er dann selbst bei Anaplus am Bosporus - dem heutigen Stadtteil Kuruçeşme in Istanbul - auf einer Säule in strenger Askese und zog eine große Schar von Schülern an. Kaiser Leon I. stiftete ihm noch eine weitere Säule neben der ersten und ließ dorthin die Reliquien des älteren Simeon Stylites aus Antiochia übertragen.
