Der hl. Apostel Philemon war der Herr des Sklaven Onesimus, den Paulus in seinem im Neuen Testament enthaltenen Philemonbrief aufforderte, den ihm Entlaufenen wieder freundlich aufzunehmen, nachdem der hl. Apostel Paulus ihn zurückgeschickt hatte. Der Überlieferung nach hat der hl. Paulus dann auch ihn bekehrt und getauft, weitere Legenden berichten, dass Philemon dann Bischof seiner Heimatstadt geworden sei und den Märtyrertod unter Kaiser Neron (54-68) erlitt.
