Der heilige Damaskinos wurde in Galata bei Konstantinopel geboren. In seiner Jugend nahm er aus Unkenntnis den Islam an, bereute dies aber zutiefst, und trat in einem der Klöster auf dem Berg Athos ein. Dort beweinte er 12 Jahre hindurch seine Verleugnung Christi. Später kam er wieder nach Konstantinopel und bekannte sich zum Christentum, weswegen ihn im Jahre 1681 die muslimischen Türken enthaupten.
